The GROW Model, developed by Sir John Whitmore in *Coaching for Performance*, is one of the most widely used coaching frameworks in the world. But its power is often underestimated—especially when the stakes are high.


What is GROW?

GROW is an acronym for a structured conversation:

It sounds simple. And that's exactly its strength.

Why GROW Works Under Pressure

In high-stakes environments—a board meeting, a product launch, a personal crisis—our brains narrow. We default to reactive thinking, losing sight of the bigger picture.

GROW forces a pause. It creates space between stimulus and response, which is where leadership lives.

  • Clarity: Separating the goal from the noise of current reality.
  • Ownership: The coachee generates the options, not the coach.
  • Commitment: "Will" is not "should." It's a concrete action plan.
  • Common Mistakes When Using GROW

    1. Rushing to Options. Leaders love solving problems. But jumping to "O" before fully exploring "R" leads to solutions for the wrong problem.

    2. Weak "Will." Vague commitments ("I'll try to…") are not commitments. Push for specificity: *What exactly? By when? How will you know?*

    3. Using it as a checklist. GROW is a *flow*, not a form. Let the conversation breathe.


    GROW in Practice: A Quick Example

    Scenario: A founder is overwhelmed by competing priorities.

  • G: "What would 'success' look like at the end of this quarter?"
  • R: "What's actually on your plate right now? What's working? What's not?"
  • O: "If you could only do three things, what would they be? What would you need to say 'no' to?"
  • W: "Which one will you commit to first? What's the very next action?"
  • In 20 minutes, chaos becomes a plan.
